Through volunteer computing new medicines can be developed, diseases can be better understood, the human genome can be explored, the physical origins of the universe can be modeled and probed, the search for signs of life on other planets can be extended... All these and other questions and more can be examined faster and to a detail never before possible.
GridRepublic is a nonprofit working to raise awareness and increase participation in volunteer computing. Working in collaboration with the BOINC program from the University of California Berkeley GridRepublic is making accessing and managing involvement in volunteer computing as easy as checking your email.
GridRepublic.org is the website which provides a central place to discover, join, and manage participation in the volunteer computing research projects available.
GridRepublic is a place to inspire interest in science, create a community for volunteer computing participants, and provide information about the research projects in an easy to understand manner.
Reason to Join?
-help out research causes important to you: diseases such as AIDS, cancer, malaria and other clean energy
-receive access to cool screensavers (most projects provide their own unique screensaver, see the photo section for examples)
-compete for ranking in the world with credits (compare how much you have contributed versus your friends or where you rank in the world)
Volunteer computing allows for research projects that would take tens of thousands of years to compute on an ordinary computer or even supercomputer to completed in just a few months, weeks, or less. The reason is the work is able to be broken up into smaller parts for computers to share a small piece of the work. The more computers that join the faster research can be done.
