Some feminist organisations are on the verge of destroying a Sevillian judge's career. His dilemma is derived from his having denounced the discrimination of men by the Spanish laws, that were initially designed to protect women from domestic violence. These laws allow men to be arrested on the basis of allegations which do not have to be substantiated by evidence. A mere call to the police from a woman claiming to be theatened or having been attacked is enough to result in arrest, so THE MAN IS ASSUMED GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT.
Judge Serrano has been the first judge to bring this problem into the public arena.
Is it any wonder therefore, that these laws, far from reducing the incidence of domestic violence, have laid open the path to more abuse, as false claims and allegations have led to injustices against men, and the subsequent frustration and anger that ensues, finds its way full circle back to the perpetrator of the false claim.
Of course men and women should be protected from violence and injustice on all levels.
However the tragedy is that these laws have not helped prevent women (or men) being abused and killed, as the number of casualties have been growing.
Notwithstanding, significant numbers of husbands and male partners have been sent to, and remain in jail on the basis of the hearsay of their female counterpart i.e. an unsubstantiated and/or non-evidence based allegation of abuse.
In a civilized western society that considers itself democratic, can this really be acceptable?
Sexism should no be supported by our legal system and this is exactly what these laws are doing.
