Intel’s goal is not only to make higher performing processors but also to help create a better tomorrow. Working in association with BOINC and GridRepublic volunteer computing, Intel’s Progress Thru Processors allows people to share a portion of their processor’s idle computer power and apply it toward life–changing re...search. With your help, scientists can expand their research and bring us one step closer to finding a cure for cancer, controlling the spread of malaria and combating global warming. By sharing your processor’s spare computing power, you can potentially help save lives and make tomorrow better for everyone. Ready to join? Click here to download the Progress Thru Processors application: http://apps.facebook.com/processors/new.php How it works: Progress Thru Processors is available to all Facebook users. The Progress Thru Processors application automatically directs a computer’s idle processor power to fuel researchers’ computational efforts. The application will activate only when a PC’s performance is not being fully utilized. When your computer usage demands more processor performance, the application defers and sits idle until spare processing capabilities become available again. The application runs automatically as a background process on a PC and will not affect performance or any other tasks. Additionally, Progress Thru Processors does not require you to leave your computer powered up unnecessarily. By keeping your PC on only as you normally would, you will be contributing to life-changing research while still being kind to the environment. Through the application’s interface on Facebook, you will be able to track your contributions and share updates with your friends and members of the Progress Thru Processors community. Ready to join? A computing project on the Internet called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search has discovered a new Mersenne prime number. At nearly 13 million digits long, it is only the 47th Mersenne prime since ancient Greek mathematicians first uncovered them.

GridRepublic has a Fan Page join to keep up with GridRepublic news and events. Plus be one of the first to know when the Facebook application is released.
Through volunteer computing new medicines can be developed, diseases can be better understood, the human genome can be explored, the physical origins of the universe can be modeled and probed, the search for signs of life on other planets can be extended... All these and other questions and more can be examined faster ...and to a detail never before possible. GridRepublic is a nonprofit working to raise awareness and increase participation in volunteer computing. Working in collaboration with the BOINC program from the University of California Berkeley GridRepublic is making accessing and managing involvement in volunteer computing as easy as checking your email. GridRepublic.org is the website which provides a central place to discover, join, and manage participation in the volunteer computing research projects available. GridRepublic is a place to inspire interest in science, create a community for volunteer computing participants, and provide information about the research projects in an easy to understand manner. Reason to Join? -help out research causes important to you: diseases such as AIDS, cancer, malaria and other clean energy -receive access to cool screensavers (most projects provide their own unique screensaver, see the photo section for examples) -compete for ranking in the world with credits (compare how much you have contributed versus your friends or where you rank in the world) Volunteer computing allows for research projects that would take tens of thousands of years to compute on an ordinary computer or even supercomputer to completed in just a few months, weeks, or less. The reason is the work is able to be broken up into smaller parts for computers to share a small piece of the work. The more computers that join the faster research can be done. To find more information check out the GridRepublic website. Being our fan will put you first in line to know about the Facebook application release and finding out about new developments coming up.
